Testing the Temperature…

Happy March! Absolutely love this time of year with everything to look forward to in nature and the increased light! Feeling a spring in my step and new ideas and thoughts are emerging for the further development of my Business.

I’d like to test the temperature with my Subscribers to the idea of offering a Pilates Retreat next year? Would love to organise one abroad (Europe) to combine exercise with warmth but could be UK based- along the coast perhaps… So many thoughts at the moment but can definitely visualise this happening in a small way to start with- ha ha!

If this would be of interest to you then I’d be both encouraged and delighted if you could spend a few moments completing the short questionnaire below. Your feedback on all that I do is always greatly appreciated! As a one woman band- I rely on my client base to keep me heading in the right direction as so to speak. Thank you in advance x

The first Beginner Reformer Course finished mid February and I was delighted that all three classes were subscribed to. Now half way through the second cohort! The next available Beginner Course will run in May on a Monday evening. Please drop me a line if interested.

March 15th is our Easter Social at Wildwood in Didcot. Table is booked for 7pm- excited for this night out together!

Please note our current Term runs through the official Easter break.

There is an amendment to my holiday dates from my original post in January. There won’t be any classes running between 29th April and 3rd May- Taking a break! All Subscriptions will be on pause during this time. I hope that my APP will be useful during this time for those that wish to workout online.

The Importance of Lateral Breath

Every now and again I think it is important to home in on the fundamentals of what we do each week in class and why? Over the last month I’ve tried to in still in classes the importance of hanging onto the movements that we execute and produce. This is only possible by activating lateral breath fully. The benefits as seen below are well worth the refinement in my opinion!

Lateral breathing involves expanding the ribcage laterally (sideways) as opposed to just breathing into the chest. Here are some reasons why lateral breath is considered important in Pilates:

  1. Core Engagement: Lateral breathing encourages the engagement of the deep stabilizing muscles of the core, including the transverse abdominis. This helps create a strong and stable foundation for movement, supporting proper alignment and posture during Pilates exercises.

  2. Improved Ribcage Mobility: Lateral breathing promotes flexibility and mobility in the ribcage. This increased range of motion is beneficial for movements involving spinal articulation, rotation, and lateral flexion, allowing for a more fluid and controlled execution of exercises.

  3. Facilitation of Diaphragmatic Breathing: Lateral breathing often involves diaphragmatic breathing, where the diaphragm contracts downward, allowing the lungs to fill with air. This type of breathing can enhance oxygen exchange and respiratory efficiency, promoting relaxation and reducing unnecessary tension in the body.

  4. Mind-Body Connection: Focusing on lateral breath cultivates a mind-body connection. The emphasis on breath awareness helps individuals become more attuned to their bodies, fostering a sense of mindfulness during Pilates practice. This heightened awareness can lead to improved concentration, control, and precision in movements.

  5. Enhanced Core Stability: Lateral breathing contributes to overall core stability by encouraging the activation of the pelvic floor muscles. The coordinated engagement of the deep abdominals and pelvic floor helps maintain stability in the lumbo-pelvic region, reducing the risk of lower back strain and injuries.

  6. Stress Reduction: Incorporating lateral breath into Pilates can have a calming effect on the nervous system. Deep, mindful breathing helps to reduce stress, alleviate tension, and promote relaxation, contributing to an overall sense of well-being.

  7. Efficient Energy Transfer: Lateral breathing facilitates efficient energy transfer throughout the body. When combined with proper movement patterns, this type of breathing allows for a smoother flow of energy from the core to the extremities, optimizing the effectiveness of Pilates exercises.

In summary, lateral breathing in Pilates is not just about oxygenating the body; it's a key element in promoting core stability, improving movement mechanics, and fostering a holistic connection between the mind and body. Incorporating this breathing technique can enhance the benefits of Pilates exercises and contribute to a more balanced and mindful approach to fitness.

Shi Heng Yi quotes“Freedom goes hand in hand with your ability to restrict yourself.” “To regain control, we must train the mind to be more present, to live in the here and now, and to find the answers within ourselves, to perceive every moment as it is, and feel the subtle changes within, to continuously work on it.

There is so much to be gained within this wonderful episode! Ideas for Habit forming and leading a more balanced life and the importance of looking after the bodies we live within- I do hope you enjoy as much as I did!

The Loop Bands!

As promised in a previous Post- the mini Loop Bands were trialled last month. After positive feedback they are now featuring alongside our other small Pilates props in the 6 week carousel programme! Well Done all on the great hamstring work with the ‘Lift and Lower’ exercise- great to see the burn! They work brilliantly with the ‘Oyster’ exercise too- especially for the alignment of the knees and they add that little bit extra for our abductor muscles as a bonus!
